Presenter:Dr. Jennifer Weeks

Course Description

Photo of a woman wearing chains around her neck and wrists, perhaps getting ready to be spanked.

Being spanked and BDSM are often misunderstood by mental health practitioners. Typically due to a lack of knowledge or their own personal judgements.

Current research is working to provide increased knowledge on the topic so that practitioners do not end up being labeled as mentally ill when they disclose their sexual preferences.

This publication is both a literature review as well as a qualitative analysis of the motives for engaging in BDSM from the practitioners themselves.

This study will increase the understanding of therapists when working with clients and move them towards being kink aware.

Learning Objectives

Learners will:

  1. Come to understand what the current scientific literature hypothesizes are the reasons why individuals engage in M/S activities
  2. Understand the difference between intrinsic external origins for BDSM behavior
  3. Come to have a greater understanding of BDSM practice
