Accreditation:NBCC ACEP: 7250
Credit Hours:1.25
Presenter:Dr. Jennifer Weeks

Course Description

Two people facing each other across an open case file, with a neurodiversity infinity symbol representing autism spectrum disorder and balanced scales in the background.

This study is a systematic review of the relationship between Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Sexual Offending (SO), an overlooked issue in both clinical and research settings.

The analysis of 19 publications reveals that while individuals with ASD are significantly more likely to be victims of crime than perpetrators, a small minority do offend.

These offenses are often directly linked to the core psychopathological characteristics of ASD, such as deficits in social interaction, misunderstanding of social cues, and restrictive or repetitive interests that become sexualized.

Learning Objectives

Course participants will:

  1. Come to understand what sexual offenses are commonly committed among those with ASD who do sexually offend.
  2. Learn the key psychopathological vulnerabilities individuals with ASD have that may increase their vulnerability to sexually offend.
