Course Description
A key component of treatment for minor attracted persons is understanding the influences and tools available to assess for recidivism.
This course is a journal article that specifically looks at recidivism rates of individuals who acknowledge sexual interest in minors and voluntarily attend treatment through the Do Not Offend project.
This research addresses several questions.
The first has to do with the “dark specter” of recidivism studies, meaning that most studies of recidivism for sexual offenses are based on new convictions. This study provides recidivism data for individuals who have not been caught by law enforcement but who are self acknowledging offending behavior.
Secondly, the study addresses what risk assessment measures were valid for assessing risk in this population of subjects who were not forensic. It makes an argument that treatment for individuals with sexual interest in children, even if considered low risk, is a wise use of resources to promote public safety.
This is an accredited course designed for Licensed Professional Counselors to earn Continuing Education Hours, or LPC CEHs
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
- Learn the difference between current recidivism rates in the research based on re-offending and re-offense rates for those who voluntarily attend treatment for minor attracted persons
- Learn what risk assessment tools are useful for those who engage in offending behaviors who voluntarily attend treatment
- Learn whether a clinical diagnosis of pedophilia influences risk of recidivism
