Course Description

This 2024 meta-analysis by Lussier and McCuish examines sexual recidivism rates in Canada and the United States from 1940 to 2019. It uses data from 468 studies encompassing nearly 390,000 individuals.
The authors investigate whether a documented drop in recidivism rates is a genuine phenomenon or an artifact of evolving research methodologies.
Through meta-regression analyses, they conclude that a substantial 45–60% decrease in sexual recidivism occurred since the 1970s, even after accounting for methodological factors.
This finding has significant implications for risk assessment and criminal justice policies, suggesting that current tools may overestimate recidivism risk. The study also highlights limitations in current recidivism research, particularly concerning the “dark figure” of undetected offenses.
