Course Description

In this live-event continuing education course, Therapeutic Uses of Horror Films, we will explore how a horror film can be used to assist clients on their journey of healing from trauma and other mental health issues.

Horror films are underutilized in therapy due to the potentially triggering nature of the films through violence, aggression, and other visual stimuli that can trigger a client.

However, within a controlled environment, in session or at home, a client could confront their triggers and trauma through this media and have a positive, cathartic experience.

The full course will include education on movie therapy in general, as well as, the use of horror movies. It will provide specific examples of horror movies and their therapeutic value.

A horror movie will be viewed by the attendees. After the movie viewing, the movie will be discussed in terms of therapeutic value and specific therapy topics that can be addressed and how.

Learning Objectives for Therapeutic Use of Horror Films

The live-event attendees will:

  1. Gain the ability to utilize horror films either in sessions or assigned as homework for the client to process and incite discussion as a therapeutic tool
  2. Be able to identify the themes and common issues of the protagonists in a horror movie and relate it to a client’s struggle
  3. Be able to identify 3 other horror films that can bused therapeutically with clients either in session or as homework

Lessons will unlock at the conclusion of the live event.
